Warm Arctic ocean workshop @DMI-new date! @ DMI
Dec 5 – Dec 6 all-day

The Arctic surface temperature has been increasing significantly and is rising twice as fast as the global mean.  The extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice is rapidly declining, and is consecutively below the average of 1981 – 2010 in all seasons since 2010. The Arctic sea ice has currently been on record low extent since the beginning of 2016. Meantime the Greenland ice sheet has experienced excessive surface melt. Why is Arctic sea ice disappearing so rapidly? What are the impacts of Arctic warming? How will Greenland ice sheet respond to the disappearing of Arctic sea ice?

Confirmed talks by :
Timo Wihma, Finish Meteorological Institute
Dirk Notz (via Skype), Max Planck Institute, Hamburg
Wieslaw Maslowski, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California
Svend Funder (retired), Natural History Museum of Denmark

The program will start at 11:30  the 5th dec and end by late afternoon the 6th at DMI. If you want to attend please email Christian and Jens directly (cr@dmi.dk and jhc@dmi.dk)

Holocene Workshop in Northern Sealand
Jan 23 – Jan 25 all-day

The preliminary program for the upcoming workshop on Holocene climate change organized within the framework of ice2Ice can be found here: holocene-ice2ice-workshop-2017-preliminary-program. Data-people and modellers are equally welcome.

The workshop will take place on January 23-25, 2017 in Dronningmølle at the North coast of Sjælland. 2 to 3 summerhouses is rented for the meeting, and all activities will take place at the location with the aim of enhancing interaction between the participants during the course of the whole day. We plan on short introductions to each topic, followed by discussions based on available data and model experiments, and relevant evening key-notes.

It should take approximately 2 – 2.5  hours to get there by public transport from Kastrup. We will look into the possibility of organizing bus transfer for the participant’s from/to the airport. The meeting will be planned so that it will be possible to arrive with the Monday morning early flight from Bergen, and to catch a late flight back to Bergen Wednesday evening. There will also be a possibility for checking-in on Sunday evening (22nd).

The focus of the workshop will be on understanding the Holocene linkages between ocean conditions, sea ice and land ice, with specific emphasis on:

  1. The mid to late Holocene climate transition
  2. Climate variability of the last 3 ka

We would also like to address the following questions:

  1. Why does the water isotope record from Greenland  not record any of the significant climatic signals observed in other climate archives/proxies?
  2. What are the ways to enhance the interplay between paleoclimatic research and studies focusing on the effects of climate on past civilizations?
Invited speakers:
Audrey Morley,  National University of Ireland Galway
Camilla Andersen, Geol. Surv. of Denmark and Greenland
Harvey Weiss, Yale University
The list of participants can be found here: dronningmolle_workshop_participants_dec_2016

PhD bootcamp @Geilo, Norway
Jan 30 – Feb 3 all-day

The Ice2Ice PhD bootcamp is held in Geilo, Norway, from Monday January 30th to Friday February 3rd, and we will stay in a large cozy lodge that is owned by the local hostel. The bootcamp week gives each of the three groups the opportunity to work intensively on their self-defined project together with their mentor(s). The groups are

Group 1:
Evangeline
Henrik
Niccolo
Lisa

Group 2:
Ida
Mads
Martin
Søren
Jonathan

Group 3:
Nicholas
benjamin
Iben
Silje
Andreas

Rasmus Anker Pedersen and Lars Henrik Smedsrud will join the bootcamp as group mentors. Additional group mentors will join on a skype connection.

The program for the week can be found here (pdf). The program includes project introduction presentations on the Monday, several group work sessions, cross-group discussion, student-organised seminars, mentor presentations by Lars Henrik and Rasmus, a social activity on the Thursday and a few social events in the evenings.

We will get to Geilo on the Monday by train that departures from Bergen central station 07.57. We will meet 07.45 in the entrance hall and walk to the train together as we have specific seats. The train ride takes approximately 3 hours. The trip back to Bergen on the Friday is also by train and leaves Geilo station 15.41. Train tickets for the bootcamp participants have been bought by the organisers and will be handed out upon departure. Please show up at Bergen station in due time as the next train for Geilo does not leave in another couple of hours. As the train leaves early Monday morning we ask the Copenhagen-based participants to arrive no later than the day before. For those who have to fly back to Copenhagen by the end of bootcamp we recommend the SAS flight 10am Saturday morning.

The hostel provides bed linen and towels, but please remember to bring warm clothes as the social activity is taking place outdoors.

You may bring skis to the lodge but skiing will only be allowed during unscheduled periods, or free time (In most cases this will be early morning before starting around 9am, or after finish in the evening. Be sure to bring a headlamp too!). Only cross-country skiing is an option as the ski slopes are closed in the early morning and in the evening.

We look forward to a productive bootcamp!

best wishes,
Evangeline, Nicholas and Mads

DMI/NBI bi-monthly meeting @NBI @ NBI, room 235
Feb 16 @ 13:00 – 16:00

DMI/NBI meeting to keep each other up to date on progress and collaborations.

This meeting will be at NBI, room 235. Please prepare by reading this material: ice2ice_workshop-and-dissemination.

1) Input to the ice2ice all staff meeting.
This includes wishes for working groups for the discussion session at the the all staff meeting.  A draft program for the workshop is available here. The ice2ice all staff meeting will have a slightly different format than last. Each Work package will have 1⁄2 an hour input for all and then split into smaller working groups for about 1.5 hour based on your wishes. The smaller working groups will be based on your input, so we will spend time considering what to work on during the ice2ice all staff. If you have forgotten exactly what each work package contains, please read through the ice2ice description of work page 9-16.
2) Input on dissemination to ERC reporting
The first ERC scientific reporting is coming up and we will discuss the input to this, so if you have had any dissemination activities please have information on them ready.
3) other items

Contact Helle if you have items for the agenda.
